Lydd Airport, Kent
About this project
In early 2015 we were asked to construct a 1 hour fire partition wall in the aircraft hanger at Lydd Airport in Kent. Our client Neilcott Construction Ltd were mostly concerned about wind load pressure on the wall when the huge door for taking airplanes in and out was wide open. Because of that we proposed our Fermacell F60S Jumbo Stud Partition based on heavy gauge SFS high bay wall studwork and very deep head channel at the top of the high bay wall to protect the jumbo wall partition from falling and to give enough head deflection space.
We built the wall using the Fermacell F60S partition system to a height of 11.5m by 34m long. We needed to take extra care because of airplanes being parked next to our working area.
Due to the roof trusses having limited space to work around it was a challenge (that we overcame) to complete the installation of the very top of the high bay partition was more difficult as we need.
Quality of work and timescales were very important to allow the Airport hanger and its staff to return to full working capacity as soon as possible. We had only one week to build the partition wall and to leave site clean and tidy for the aircraft and staff. It was also very important to protect aircraft parked next to the wall from dust so to eliminate dust production we applied an industrial finish only upon request from the client.
Our Fermacell F60S jumbo Stud wall system was boarded with Fermacell Ultimate Performance board with all joints being glued with Fermacell Joint stick glue for maximum strength.
We divided the Airport hanger in the agreed time and to client's full satisfaction. This was achieved by having 5 fully trained Jumbo Stud operatives on site to complete the project.
